RENT ended its run on Broadway two years ago today, September 7, 2008. I wanted to simply say thank you to Jonathan Larson for writing such a beautiful musical, and to thank anyone and everyone who has been a part of this show; the casts, the crews, and the fans. RENT is more than a musical. It will forever stay in my heart and be a wonderful part of my life.
I will never forget standing outside the Nederlander, two years ago, for hours, with dozens of other RENTheads; singing songs from the show and not really expecting anything, just wanting to be close to what was happening. This show has such an enormous heart and so much spirit, and I will miss it always.

I know what it’s like to be creatively stuck, and I know what it’s like to be ashamed of your past and the feeling of just wanting to hide away from the rest of the world. He really hates himself, and that I really understand. But sometimes it is hard to like a character who kind of loves his own misery so much. I think he is kind of self indulgent, and that is the hardest part about the role. Making him vulnerable and angry and depressed, cause he certainly is all those, but also making him likable, empathetic, and intelligent is kind of tricky. It took me a long long time before I felt comfortable playing that role.

It continues to amaze and delight me that he got the chance to do this. I just can’t believe that NPH somehow managed to discover and cast my favorite person to ever play the role (and someone I love so much in general), even though Telly had only ever understudied Angel before.
